SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--OmniVision Technologies, Inc., a leading developer of advanced digital imaging solutions, today announced in advance of CES the OV40A, a 40MP, 1.0 micron pixel image sensor that features super high gain and de-noise technologies for the best-in-class low-light camera performance in the 1/1.7” optical format. This sensor also offers multiple high dynamic range (HDR) options for the best quality still and video captures. Additionally, it supports 1080p slow-motion and high-speed video captures at 240 frames per second (fps) with phase-detection autofocus.

“TSR estimates there will be 855 million image sensors with 40MP or higher resolution shipped to smartphone manufacturers in 2021, which presents a huge opportunity for this new image sensor,” said James Liu, senior technical marketing manager at OmniVision. “The OV40A’s unique combination of features is bringing flagship-level performance to the main, wide, ultrawide and video cameras in this fast-growing market segment.”
The OV40A is designed for best-in-class performance with many industrial, cutting-edge technologies. It supports super high gain of up to 256x, and is embedded with multi-sampling de-noise functionality for enhanced low-light performance. This sensor also offers excellent HDR through selective conversion gain for the optimum balance between low-light image quality and HDR, along with 2- and 3-exposure staggered HDR timing. These features provide designers with maximum flexibility to select the best HDR method for the contrasting light and dark areas in a given scene.
Built on OmniVision’s PureCel® Plus-S stacked die technology, the OV40A integrates an on-chip, 4-cell (4C) color filter array and hardware remosaic, which provides high quality, 40MP Bayer output in real time. For low-light conditions, this sensor can use near-pixel binning to output a 10MP image, as well as 4K2K and 1080p video, with four times the sensitivity, yielding 2.0 micron pixel-equivalent low-light performance. In either case, the OV40A can consistently capture the highest quality images for different resolution video modes through fast mode switch.
Output formats include 40MP at 30 fps, 10MP with 4C binning at 120 fps, 4K2K video at 60 fps and 1080p video at 240 fps. All of these formats can be captured with phase-detection autofocus. Other features include a CPHY interface, multi-camera sync and a 34.7 degree chief ray angle.

Back in February OmniVision unveiled a 64 MP 1/1.7” sensor, which had 0.8 µm pixels. Now the company has come up with a larger 64MP solution – this one measures 1/1.34” and has 1.0µm pixels. This sensor can be used in wide and ultrawide cameas.
The larger pixels on the new OmniVision OV64A are 60% more sensitive to light compared to 0.8µm pixels, says the company, which makes the sensor superior in low light. Naturally, it has a 4-cell color filter (aka Quad Bayer) for pixel binning.
While it can output 8K video at 30fps, a more interesting mode is 4K with 4-in-1 binning, resulting in quite large 2.0µm effective pixels. When used for stills, this same binning mode can output 16MP images.

And it’s not just binning, the sensor supports 2- and 3-exposure staggered HDR, another way to improve image quality in challenging lighting. There is hardware on the chip that does 3-exposure, 4-cell HDR and tone mapping. This is faster than sending the data to the phone’s chipset to perform the calculations, which helps reduce motion artifacts.
Besides 8K, OV64A sensor is capable of 4K 120 fps video with electronic image stabilization and it also offers 1080p/240 and 720/480 modes.
Mass production of the OV64A is expected to begin before the end of this year. OmniVision quotes a forecast by TSR, which says that 322 million image sensors with resolution of 50 MP or higher will be shipped inside smartphones in 2021 and the company wants a piece of that action.
