A barebones laptop is usually produced by Original Design Manufacturers (ODM) like Quanta, Compal, Wistron, Inventec, Pegatron, ECS, FIC, ARIMA, Mitac, Clevo, MSI, etc. These ODM companies produce PCs for some brands (OEM) like Dell, HP, Lenovo, Acer, Mac, etc. Then, these products will be sold to users as OEM products. Clevo Computers is an ODM and OEM laptop manufacturer from Taiwan who started producing laptops in 1990. Clevo's high-end and low-end gaming series are widely known. However, they offer a wide range of products such as solutions for video editing, business use and mobile gaming. Original Design Manufacturers (ODM) make the laptops for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM). They in turn, add their preloaded hard drives and sell them to consumers. This is why a laptop is a bit more complicated to support with coreboot. The vast majority of laptops on the market (94% in 2011) are manufactured by a small handful of Taiwan-based original design manufacturers (ODM), although their production bases are located mostly in mainland China. Major relationships include: Quanta sells to (among others) HP, Lenovo, Apple, Acer, Dell, NEC, and Fujitsu. Clevo (Chinese: 藍天電腦; pinyin: Lántiān diànnǎo; lit. 'Blue Sky Computers') is a Taiwanese OEM/ODM computer manufacturer which produces laptop computers exclusively. They sell barebone laptops chassis (barebooks) to value-added resellers who build customized laptops for individual customers.[2][3][4][5][6]

History[edit]

Clevo was founded in 1983.[1] In 1987, the company established its laptop computer business, with production starting in 1990.[7] The company was first listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange in 1997.[7] In 1999, Clevo merged with their subsidiary, Kapok, to increase efficiency. In August 2002, Clevo had built a new factory in Kunshan, China.[1]

Background[edit]

Clevo has been ranked as fourth among Taiwanese exporters, marketing its products in over 50 countries. The company has also founded several service centers in Canada, Germany, Great Britain, China, Taiwan, South Korea and the United States. These centers serve various businesses, ranging in size from small to multinational, with a variety of product selections in either small or large quantities.[1] Clevo focuses its business on designing, developing, manufacturing, and distributing electronic equipment and laptops.[8]

There is a discrepancy between the 2009 numbers due to the various sources cited; i.e. the units sold by all ODMs add up to 144.3 million laptops, which is much more than the given total of 125 million laptops. The market share percentages currently refer to those 144.3 million total. Sources may indicate hard drive deliveries to the ODM instead of actual laptop sales, though the two numbers may be closely correlated.
